New Leader FAQ

You are interested in becoming a volunteer leader at Allambie Scout Group. You likely have some questions. We have tried to answer some common ones below.

Which age section do you need leaders for? Joeys – 5-8 year olds. We have 2 vacancies as we have a leader on long term sick leave and another is moving up with her child later in the year. All our other sections have lots of leaders, but if you are keen to join another section instead, please do still reach out.

How much time do I need to have available? We run for 4 terms a year for 10 weeks. We would ask that you are able to attend at least half of the weekly meetings – which for Joeys are 1Hr, and other sections 1.5 to 2 hours.

What Experience do I need? None. Ideally you are going to like outdoor activities – but we provide all training. Many of our leaders had no scouting experience.

Do I need any qualifications? No. Its possible to obtain qualifications as part of leader training, but there are no prerequisites.

Will there be any cost? No – we provide everything including uniform

What age are leaders? You need to 18 or over and there is no maximum age, just need to be reasonably mobile.

Do I need a Working With Children’s Check?- Yes. This is free for volunteer roles. You will also need to be able to pass a police background check.

I have my own kids who want to join Yes, and immediate jump of waitlist for any section (5-18 year olds) if you are a leader

Why should I join Its a very fulfilling way to give back. You would be helping to shape the next generation of adults. If you have your own kids that would be joining also, it’s a fantastic way to spend quality time with them.

Can I come for a trial – Absolutely and this is mandatory so that you can see if it’s a good fit for you and you are a good fit for us.

Who does this role suit? – Anyone, we have leaders of all ages, varying professions and backgrounds, most with kids in the group but several without or who have kids that have aged out.

Will I be dropped in the deep end? No – we have 22 leaders across 4 age sections and are by some distance the biggest and most popular group in the area – there is lots of adult support.

When is Joeys run – Wednesdays 5-6 PM during school term time. See our website for the other sections running times.

Where is Joeys run – Based from the hall at Allambie next to the tennis courts and oval. Often out and about in the local area, especially during the summer.

How much do I get paid – Nothing – this is volunteer role – we are all volunteers. It’s very rewarding in other ways.

I don’t really want a kid facing role – We have lots of other roles, such as Equipment Management, Administration, Building management etc – please contact us for more info.

I still have questions– Please contact us for a chat using the contact form below.
